Tim Burton is a Genius

I read this article on Buzzfeed a few weeks ago.

It made me realize just how awesome and talented Tim Burton really is. He does many movies that you can instantly tell are his but always some that come as a little bit of a surprise.
Here are some of my favorite movies of his and why they are so cool.

The Nightmare Before Christmas:

This movie has a lot of memories associated with it for me. It was my Grandma's favorite Disney movie, when she passed away it was hard to watch it again. I love this because it is so different from any other Disney movie out there. The songs are all classics and are written so well. My favorite has to be, This is Halloween at the very beginning of the movie. I also love the scenery and imagery that is in this movie. Everything a little details that are very intricate and special.

Big Fish:

I haven't watched this movie in such a long time but it's making my list anyways. The special thing with this movie is that you can't really tell that it was directed by Tim Burton. It is so unlike any of his other movies. It just doesn't seem like the stereotypical "Tim Burton" movie. The story itself is Tim Burton-like, in that it is very quirky and strange.

Sweeney Todd:
I love this musical! It has to be in my top 5 for sure. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are absolutely fantastic. They both have pretty good singing voices and they just bring their own flair to any role. The two of them together have perfect chemistry in every movie. What makes this movie so great is the emotion in every song. The blood is so fake in this movie, but that just adds to the emotion and look of the movie.

Of course, I could continue to talk about so many more movies. I haven't even grazed the surface of Tim Burton's genius. If I were to talk about more movies, this post would take hours to read. Tim Burton's imagination and talent is the most unique out there. He will continue to make amazing movies and art. His work will live on way longer than he will and that is a true testament to his work.

Mutant of the Week: Destiny

Last week I featured Rogue whom was taken in by Irene Adler (Destiny).  Personally, I had not heard of this character and was intrigued.  Especially, since she shares the name of Sherlock Holmes love interest.  Therefore this week I am featuring Destiny.

Name: Irene Adler
            Destiny
First Appearance: X-men #141 (1981)
Powers and Abilities: Can see into the future.  Can mentally scan alternate futures and perceive probable events.

Quick Bio:  Irene was born into a wealthy family in Austria in the 19th century.  She was originally overwhelmed with her ability and spent nearly a year writing her visions into books.  Destiny met Mystique when trying to understand her powers more.  The two became lifetime companions and eventually lovers.  They took in Rogue.  Destiny helped Mystique create the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.   Later she was killed by Legion-an event which she had foreseen (1989 issue)

Looking at it now, I realize why I had never heard of Destiny.  She didn't seem to last in the Marvel Universe to long.  First appearance was in 81 and she died in 89.  Check out the full story of Destiny here.

Weekly Etsy Find #6

Hello everyone and welcome once again to your Wednesday Weekly Etsy Find.  Halloween is so close!  I for one am excited, it is afterall my favoirte holiday.  Therefore this week I am featuring not one but two items related to Halloween.
First we have this cute little dog costume.  Yes, I said dog costume.  I want to dress my dog up this year because I am somewhat crazy.  Seeing as I am hoping to dress as Bellatrix Lestrange this year I went to Etsy to find something for the dog related to Harry Potter.  I found this cute, simple outfit.
handmade Harry potter pet costume
What I like is it is easy for most people to understand-no explanations as to what it is supposed to be.  Plus it is only 7.99$ plus shipping and handling.  Seeing as I am not sure if my dog will even tolerate having it on and he chews everything lately it is nice to not have to spend a boatload on something for a night or two.  You can find this item and other Halloween inspired items at Di Ash Designs.

As I said before, I am hoping to go as Bellatrix this year.  Again, I turned to Etsy for ideas and help.  I found this gem-a necklace very similar to what Bellatrix wears.  Now if only I could find a dress that would work and make a wand (found how to do that on Pinterest)
Bellatrix Lestrange Necklace Bird Skull, Raven, Crow, on Black Ribbon, Plain or Floral Skull, Silver or Brass Tones, Harry Potter Inspired
The necklace and Bellatrix for comparison.

You can check out the necklace at DoubleDmentia.  They also have some other interesting jewelry as well that you should check out.

That is it for this week.  Let me know what ideas you have for ideas in the comments?  I'm always interested to hear of costume ideas.

Everything We Learned at the Marvel Press Conference Today

Marvel held a press conference today at the El Capitan Theatre. President, Kevin Feige was there to announce everything.
Below are all the movies that will be released in the coming years.

First up is the 3rd Captain America movie. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans were there to talk about it. This will also be the beginning of Phase 3!

No word on who will play Dr. Strange yet.

Yay!

There better be Loki in this!

Chadwick Boseman will play Black Panther.

Before this was announced, footage was shown that pictured the Infinity Gauntlet.

Captain Marvel will be known as Carol Danvers.

Very little was said on this one.

There was also a very short Q&A section. We learned that right now, there will be no solo movies for Black Widow or The Hulk. They did mention that Black Widow will have a very key role sometime in the future. I am very excited for all of these movies! Hopefully Dr. Strange will be announced soon. Marvel will not be releasing any writer/director/actor information until it's 100% confirmed.

New Zealand Air's LOTR Themed Safety Videos

Air New Zealand debuted a new airline safety video last week.
Here it is below!

Below is the first safety video that they debuted a couple of years ago.

While looking for these two videos, I noticed that Air New Zealand has made quite a few awesome videos. They have used Sports Illustrated swim suit model, Bear Grylls and Betty White. Those are just a few of the different videos.
I would love it if every airline would do something like this! Enjoy all of the videos, I know I did!

Man Crush Monday: Elijah Wood

Elijah Wood:

Why We Love Him: Elijah Wood plays our favorite Hobbit, Frodo. It's hard to believe that the first movie came out about 13 years ago. It really sky rocketed all of those actors into fame. Elijah Wood's portrayal as Frodo was the most memorable of the movie. His story was why the movies' events were happening. Elijah Wood has been in quite a lot of things since then but none as memorable or classic as Lord of the Rings.

Nerdy Roles: Lord of the Rings 1-3, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Upcoming Role(s):
  • Over the Garden Wall (TV Mini-Series)
  • The Last Witch Hunter

Mutant of the Week: Rogue

Name: Anne Marie
            Rogue
First Appeearance: Avengers Annual #10 (1981)
Powers and Abilities: Can absorb the powers, memories, personality of others through skin to skin contact.  This can be dangerous in the fact that too much contact can kill the other human/mutant

Quick Bio: Rogue was born Anne Marie (last name unknown) and was raised by her Aunt Carrie after tragedy struck her parents.  Young Rogue ran away from home at a young age and was taken in by Mystique and Irene Adler (Destiny).  She discovered her powers while kissing her then boyfriend and she gained his memories. This made her realize she could not be around "normal" people and she joined the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.  During her first mission with the Brotherhood she permanantly absorbed the powers of Ms. Marvel.  This upset Rogue because she couldn't control her abilities and she turned to the X-Men and Charles Xavier for help.

Other Interesting Note: Fell in love with Gambit even though they could not touch.  They later sought telepathic therapy with Emma Frost to help with this.

Rogue was portrayed by Anna Paquin in the first three X-Men films as well as Days of Future Past

Weekly Etsy Find #5

The shop

Hello there, time for another Wednesday Weekly Etsy Find.  This week I have something for Game of Thrones fans.  I found this gem just this week!

The shop Lorinas has these great, hand painted GoT banners for each Great house.  I am posting for House Stark since that is my favorite but they have each of the houses and then some.  They all look very well done and true to the show.  The shop has a five star rating as well which always helps me personally decide if I want to buy from a particular shop or not.  Check them out by clicking the link above for more of the artwork.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies Character Posters

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies is coming on December 17th. Character posters have all been released and they are amazing!

Legolas and Thranduil have to be my favorite posters. Legolas is my favorite character in the whole world of Tolkien. Thranduil's picture is just stunning with his bright, blue eyes.

Gandalf and Galadriel will be very interesting to watch in this next movie. Judging by other posters that I have seen, there is going to be some focus on their relationship.

Bard and Tauriel, I feel are kind of underrated characters. For Tauriel that makes sense because she doesn't exist in the real Tolkien world. I still love that they added her in. Bard will have some glory in this movie, which I am excited about.

Bilbo and Thorin, if the movie stays true to the book then these too will have a difficult relationship. Decisions will be made and lines will be crossed.

Peter Jackson, I love that he has a poster. This is a nod to his recurring cameo in the movies LOTR and The Hobbit. It's something that true fans will get right away.

There are more posters that were released last week, but I wanted to focus on the character portraits. They are just beautiful photos. I cannot wait for this movie but at the same time I am a little sad. This will be the last Hobbit movie which means the last movie that has anything to do with Lord of the Rings. Let's hope it goes out with an amazing movie!

Gotham: Viper

What another interesting episode of Gotham. I am really beginning to like this show.  This week was about a terrible drug being dispersed throughout Gotham that made the taker extremely strong but then eventually killed them.  Of course Gordon and Bullock were put in charge of the case.  We also got to see what Oswald is up to once again over at camp Maroni.
This was an interesting concept this week.  I'm going to try and not give much away but there is some Wayne Enterprises involved with everything.  I am still curious as to who just takes a random green drug handed to you on the street.  I get there are addicts in the world but really, none of these people found this suspicious?  Just saying.
As usual my favorite part was seeing what Oswald is up to.  He told Maroni (played by David Zayas, previously from Dexter) his past with Falcone and Fish Mooney.  The dude has balls.  I am pretty sure Maroni likes this and is beginning to like him.  Where will he go next?
Finally, we go to see just what Fish Mooney is up to with her newest employee.  That sneaky woman has some big plans for power I think.  It is starting to make sense.

I do wish they would feature Ed Nigma a little bit more.  He appeared once again but only briefly.  I am assuming his role will expand in the future once the Penguins story line is closer to being completed.  Regardless, still a good show.  What were your thoughts on this weeks episode?

Man Crush Monday: Luke Evans

Luke Evans:

Why We Love Him: Luke Evans has been in a couple of movies that didn't do extremely well but I loved them. Immortals and The Three Musketeers, which were pretty good movies. His major claim to fame has to be the new Hobbit movies where he plays Bard, the Bowman. He is also playing Dracula which is pretty bad-ass. I think that he is a very good actor and I can not wait to see more from him.

Nerdy Roles: The Hobbit 1-3, Dracula Untold

Upcoming Role(s):

  • The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
  • High-Rise (with Tom Hiddleston!!)
  • The Crow (this was just announced, it is listed as a crime/fantasy movie. No plot yet.)

Mutant of the Week: Emma Frost

Name: Emma Frost
Aliases: The White Queen
First Appearance: X-Men #129
Powers and Abilities: Telepathy.  Can telepathically sedate enemies if they are already unconscious -they will stay that way until she un-sedates them.  After the attack on Genosha she can transform her body into organic diamond.
Other attributes: Highly skilled with electronics and and electronic theory.

Emma Frost was born into a rich family in Massachusetts.  When she was older she became a stockholder in a multi-billion dollar conglomerate.  Her success caught the attention of the group the Hellfire Club which she joined.  She became a ally of Sebastian Shaw who was conspiring for world domination.
Emma would later recruit young mutants and teach them to hone their abilities at her school.  These students became the Hellions and Emma's mutant super team.  The Hellions would meet the X-Men when Emma tried to recruit a young Kitty Pryde. They would meet on several occasions and joined forces to protect Emma from a terrorist by the name of Trevor Fitzroy.  The attempt to save Emma wasn't completely successful as Emma was sent into a coma.  While in the coma she was kept at Xavier's School and her school was will to Xavier who added it to the quickly expanding Xavier Institute.  During her coma Emma also took control of Iceman's body and his mind took over her body.  She would awake and become Headmistress of her school once again.

Other important notes to include is that she had a romance with Scott Summers.  She also suffered the attack on the island of Genosha which wiped out the rest of the islands mutant population.
Emma appeared in X-Men First Class and Days of Future past portrayed by January Jones.

As with the previous Mutant of the Week's this is just a quick, incomplete background on the character.  For more information check out Emma Frost's full biography here.
